Federico Caricasulo has taken over the GRT Yamaha domination at Imola from teammate Lucas Mahias by topping the second free practice session, as Kenan Sofuoglu jumped up to fifth place ahead of his final World Superbike bow.
The Italian rider produced a 1m 51.190s to edge out defending World Supersport champion Mahias to take the headlines at his home round, while his GRT Yamaha teammate failed to better his FP1 timesheet-topping time which saw him shuffled down to second place.
Sandro Cortese rose up to third place for Kallio Racing Yamaha and moved to within two-tenth of Mahias with Jules Cluzel taking fourth place for NRT Yamaha to continue the Japanese manufacturer’s domination of the series so far in 2018.
Five-time World Supersport champion Sofuoglu made significant gains in FP2 to move up to fifth place for Puccetti Kawasaki ahead of his final race before retiring due to ongoing injuries troubles.
Raffaelle De Rosa charged back into contention for MV Agusta after a subdued FP1 to take sixth place on the combined times ahead of Profile Racing Triumph’s Luke Stapleford and fellow MV Agusta rider Ayrton Badovini.
Hikari Okubo (Puccetti Kawasaki) and Randy Krummenacher (Bardahl Evan Bros Yamaha) were the final two to secure an automatic spot into Superpole 2 ahead of qualifying as Team Lorini Honda’s Kyle Smith narrowly missed out in 11th, by less than one-tenth, after failing to improve on his best lap time from the morning session.
