Defending World Supersport champion Lucas Mahias has produced the perfect start following the summer break by taking pole position ahead of GRT Yamaha team-mate Federico Caricasulo.
Mahias, who slipped down to fifth place in the riders’ championship following his crash at Misano back in July, stormed to pole position by almost three-tenths of a second ahead of his team-mate at the Portuguese track.
World Supersport championship leader Sandro Cortese produced a late improvement to leap on to the front row for Kallio Racing Yamaha to shuffle main title rival Jules Cluzel down to the front of the second row.
The NRT Yamaha rider is joined by MV Agusta’s Raffaelle De Rosa and Bardahl Evan Bros. Yamaha’s Randy Krummenacher on the second row, with the Italian rider qualifying through Q1, with Kyle Smith heading up the third row for CIA Landlords Insurance Honda.
Ayrton Badovini (MV Agusta) and Hikari Okubo (Puccetti Kawasaki) complete row three at Portimao ahead with Hannes Soomer (Racedays Honda) and Corentin Perolari (GMT94 Yamaha) who were both promoted up a spot after Luke Stapleford crashed out of Q2 on his opening lap for Profile Racing Yamaha.
World Supersport debutant Hector Barbera was the unlucky 13th-placed rider on the grid after narrowly missing out on progressing into W2 behind Puccetti Kawasaki team-mate Okubo and MV Agusta’s De Rosa.
