Bennetts British Superbike championship leader Leon Haslam has continued his winning run at Cadwell Park with a gritty victory in the opener fending off Bradley Ray to secure his Showdown spot.
The JG Speedfit Kawasaki rider has maintained his record of winning at least one race in every BSB round he’s contested at the Lincolnshire circuit but was made to sweat with attacks from pole-sitter Ray.
Despite taking the holeshot, Haslam found himself behind Ray who used the Buildbase Suzuki’s power to drive past on the start/finish straight on lap three.
A mid-race safety car, triggered by an off at Hall bends for Chrissy Rouse on the Movuno.com Halsall Racing Suzuki, briefly halted the momentum but once the race restarted Haslam started to size up Ray.
On lap 14 he dived up the inside at Park corner only to run wide to let Ray back ahead but two laps later Haslam got the same move done on the Suzuki rider before easing clear to take his eighth career win at Cadwell Park.
The action intensified behind the front two with Jake Dixon pinching the final podium spot from Be Wiser Ducati’s Glenn Irwin with a move up the inside on the final lap at the hairpin. The RAF Regular & Reserve Kawasaki rider’s third place ensures he also books his top six spot after the Cadwell Park opener.
With Irwin second, Tommy Bridewell impressed in the front pack to take fifth place on the Moto Rapido Ducati with a gap to Tyco BMW’s Christian Iddon in sixth.
Peter Hickman moved into the top six Showdown spots with seventh place for Smiths Racing BMW by jumping ahead of Danny Buchan who crashed out of the opening race for FS-3 Racing Kawasaki.
Tarran Mackenzie surprised as top Yamaha rider ahead of Anvil Hire Yamaha’s James Ellison and McAMS Yamaha team-mate Josh Brookes.
Richard Cooper secured 11th place for Buildbase Suzuki ahead of JG Speedfit Kawasaki’s Luke Mossey as Jason O’Halloran (Honda Racing), Michael Laverty (Tyco BMW) and Tom Neave (Honda Racing rounded out the points places.
