Max Calls For Tobacco Proof

FIA president Max Mosley has appealed for both sides in the tobacco argument to submit evidence regarding the supposed link between sponsorship and the decision to start smoking.

The governing body has maintained that it will introduce an immediate ban on tobacco advertising in motorsport should a link be proven, but has so far only received one document, from anti-smoking lobbyists ASH. The FIA has now called for other evidence to be submitted by 1 July 1999, before it is passed on to an "independent legal authority for judgement".
