Despite modifications to improve its speed, the Supertec F1 engine continued to suffer at the recent Barcelona tests.


Although Williams, Benetton and British American Racing all noted the engine's improved power, they also suffered a higher failure rate over the three day test, as the latest modifications appeared to have sapped the unit's usual reliability.

Giancarlo Fisichella's engine failed mid-afternoon on day one, cutting short Benetton's initial test programme, while Jacques Villeneuve was forced to wait and watch as his BAR engineers changed his powerplant after persistent problems on the final day. Ralf Schumacher, meanwhile, spent most of Thursday morning sitting in the pits as his Williams also suffered an early failure.
