The Canadian - and team-mate Ricardo Zonta - struggled throughout Friday to find a suitable set-up to cope with Interlagos' notorious bumps and, having missed the party on Friday night, continued to suffer on Saturday. Zonta's massive crash on Saturday morning did not help to lift the mood in the BAR camp and, with the remainder of that session cancelled, Villeneuve went into qualifying not knowing either the cause of the accident, or how to trim the car for a fast time.
To make matters worse, his best effort was subsequently annulled because of fuel irregularities.
