Fisi Survives Monza Smash.

Giancarlo Fisichella emerged unscathed from a 150mph crash at Monza, just days after Michael Schumacher was hospitalised after crashing at the British GP.

The young Italian was testing for his Benetton team at the Italian venue when the accident happened. Eye-witnesses claim that the car snapped out of control at the first corner - Curva Grande - and slammed into the barriers at speeds estimated at 150mph. Unlike Schumacher, Fisichella was able to extricate himself from the wreck unaided, and walked back to the pits before being taken to the medical centre for checks.

Although there are claims that the Benetton suffered a loss of drive to the rear wheels before the accident, team personnel believe that driver error was probably to blame.

"Let's just say that Giancarlo had a little bit too much faith in himself," said a spokesman.

The Italian, who is struggling this season in an uncompetitive car, later declared himself fit enough to resume testing, and will be out in reserve driver Laurent Redon's machine today [Wednesday]. A brand new car is being shipped out from Britain for the rest of the test, which Benetton is likely to extend into Friday.
