Sensibly, Schumacher has been allocating a part of his ?19.7million a year salary to the insurance fund since joining Ferrari, and stands to receive almost ?8million if he has to sit out the rest of the season. A mere ?3.5million will come his way if he is able to return as early as Monza in September.
Heinz-Harald Frentzen, meanwhile, continues to race on despite reports that his broken leg is more seriously injured than originally thought.
The Jordan star has apparently chipped the top of the tibia in his right leg but, despite claiming to be in agony when walking, insists that he cannot feel the injury while driving.
