It takes two to replace Stepney.

The roles occupied by injured Ferrari engineer Nigel Stepney will be shared by two men at this weekend's European Grand Prix.

Englishman Stepney was bowled over by Michael Schumacher's car at Barcelona two weeks ago, and the broken leg he suffered in the incident will keep him out of action for the next few events. He occupied the key positions of chief mechanic as well as fuel hose man for the team, which has now decided that one replacement will not suffice this weekend.

He occupied the key positions of chief mechanic as well as fuel hose man for the team, which has now decided that one replacement will not suffice this weekend.

In Stepney's place, therefore, come Claudio Bisi as chief mechanic, and Pietro Timpini as hose man. Barcelona replacement Andrea Vaccari has been stood down from fuel duties simply because the taller Timpini offers a better physical presence to take the weight of the hose itself, and offers a better entry angle towards the nozzle on the car.

The team has been practising fuel stops feverishly all week, with Luca Badoer charged with driving duties and the recovering Stepney overseeing operations at Fiorano.

The FIA, meanwhile, says it has no plans to revise pit-stop procedures in the light of the incident at Barcelona, or those in the rival CART series, this season. President Max Mosley went on to praise the safety of the revised fuelling system introduced by Ferrari and now recommended by supplier Intertechnique to the rest of the pit-lane.
