Gabriele Rumi dies.

Former Minardi co-owner Gabriele Rumi has died following a brave struggle against cancer, the Italian team revealed today [Tuesday].

Rumi was known to be ill when he passed his share of Minardi on to new owner Paul Stoddart over the winter, but it will be hard to forget the passion and determination which characterised his 20 years in Formula One, both with the Faenza minnow and other teams, including the Fondmetal outfit which he funded through his business of the same name.

As a supplier of components, notably wheels, to teams such as Williams, Ligier and Tyrrell, as well as a team owner, Rumi's contribution to the sport was considerable, and the Minardi team's loss will be shared throughout the paddock at Monaco this weekend. He was 61.

A memorial service will be held at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Rumi's home town of Palazzolo sull'Oglio tomorrow [Wednesday].
