McLaren's Mika Hakkinen who won the British Grand Prix last weekend - his first win since August last year - has admitted that he was close to tears on the podium.

The double World Champion who has had a season from hell this year up to the British Grand Prix scoring only nine points and who was cruelly robbed of victory at the Spanish GP when his car failed on the last lap said: "My emotions were running high. When after almost a year, I was finally able to hear the Finnish national anthem, from the top step of the podium."

When after almost a year, I was finally able to hear the Finnish national anthem, from the top step of the podium."

He added: "I was trying to look down, but there was my wife Erja, swallowing her tears. I was trying to look up, but all I could see was the grandstand full of Finnish flags. I couldn't look anywhere without getting tears in my eyes. Finally, I was able to control my emotions."
