As a highly successful competitive show jumper before moving into car racing, Smith knows that 2002 represents a big opportunity for him with Meritus.
"Michael (Keohane) has shown the value of Scholarship Class F3 by securing one of the top drives in the Championship Class this year", remarked an elated Gavin.
"Meritus developed him into a regular race winner last year and after my testing in November, I am looking forward to working with them this year."
Technical director, Sean Thompson was pleased with Smith's pre-Christmas tests. "Gavin showed good pace and a maturity that belies his age and lack of race experience. He is committed, dedicated and keen to learn and I am sure he will race well."
Roberto Costa, team manager, was equally positive. "It is great to have signed Gavin for 2002. Though he has not had the experience some other competitors, his natural pace and attitude will see him become a strong contender as the season progresses and he learns more about the car."
