Astromega withdraws from Imola test.

Team Astromega has taken another step towards an expected withdrawal from the FIA F3000 Championship by announcing that it will not be attending the official FIA group test at Imola this weekend [24-25 October].

Having seen team manager Sam Boyle depart for a new German-based F3000 team thought to be being set up from the ashes of the Den Bla Avis squad, Mikke van Hool's operation is expected to turn its attentions to another series, possibly the Formula Renault V6 Championship which it apparently came close to considering for 2003.

Having seen team manager Sam Boyle depart for a new German-based F3000 team thought to be being set up from the ashes of the Den Bla Avis squad, Mikke van Hool's operation is expected to turn its attentions to another series, possibly the Formula Renault V6 Championship which it apparently came close to considering for 2003.

"At the start of the season, we had 20 cars in International F3000, around 25 in Formula Nissan, about 18 in Formula Renault V6 and about 15 in Euro 3000," van Hool said recently, explaining the problems of running a team one step down from Formula One, "Add to that the F3 championships and you have just too many cars for the available driver market.

"It is still very early to say what the plans are for next year, although we would like to continue in F3000 if it makes sense."

The team's official website has confirmed that its attendance at the remaining two FIA tests - at Jerez on 5-6 November and Estoril on 13-14 November - would be clarified in the near future.

Boyle left the team earlier this week, after eight years loyal service, and his departure was accompanied by the cryptic message confirming that 'an announcement regarding the future of Team Astromega' would follow....
