Britain's Mark Blundell had to be helped from his Motorola Reynard at Nazareth this evening, having been involved in a mid-race accident with Penske's Helio Castro-Neves.

The PacWest driver and his Brazilian rival came together in Turn One of the Pennsylvania circuit, which Blundell admits is far from being one of his favourites. The incident, which caused parts from both cars to be scattered across the road, brought out the yellow flags with 169 laps of the scheduled 225 in the books, and forced the remaining runners to use the pit access road to avoid the safety crews attending to the wreckage.

Blundell had been running down the field when he was caught up in the accident, having fought his way through from a lowly grid position, and was taken to the Nazareth circuit medical centre for checks.
