Yoong lands mystery deal for Mexico.

Malaysian Formula One refugee Alex Yoong will make his much-vaunted Champ Car debut in Monterrey this weekend - although few details are clear about which seat he will fill.

On the weekend that the F1 circus ships up in his homeland, Yoong has taken flight for Fundidora Park and the Tecate/Telmex Grand Prix, where he will make his debut in round two of the Ford and Bridgestone-supported CART series. According to his press office, an official announcement will be released later today, leaving much speculation surrounding which team Yoong will race with.

Initial suggestions point to either Forsythe Racing, with which the former Minardi F1 pilot was linked in the off-season, or Dale Coyne Racing, which American sources say could be on the verge of resting rookie Roberto Gonzalez. The latter appears unlikely, however, given that the youngster has had just one race in which to show his mettle and now heads for his homeland, where extra sponsorship to boost his low level of funding could be sourced.

"We can confirm that Alex left Kuala Lumpur for Monterrey in Mexico on Tuesday, in a 33-hour dash to get there for a seat fitting and be ready hours before the first practice session later today," Yoong's press office revealed, "The Tecate/Telmex Monterrey Grand Prix has three practice and two qualifying sessions slotted into the three-day programme, and this will hopefully allow Alex to get used to the car and the circuit - both of which are alien to him."

Without an alternative deal, Yoong could have been expected to be on hand with Minardi at Sepang this weekend.
