Defending race winner and series champion Wheldon will be attempting to repeat last year?EUR(TM)s success with his new team, after becoming the first Englishman in nearly 40 years to win at Indianapolis, following the late Graham Hill, who beat Scottish Lotus team-mate Jim Clark to the line in 1966. It will be Wheldon?EUR(TM)s fourth run at the famed 2.5 mile superspeedway, having made three starts for previous team Andretti Green Racing.
Dixon, meanwhile, will also make his fourth appearance at the 500 in May, having started the season with second place in last weekend's St Petersburg street race. He is the third driver from New Zealand to compete in the 500, after Denny Hulme and Graham McRae. Although he is the 2003 IRL champion, the Kiwi has yet to taste the milk of success at Indianapolis, posting a best finish of eighth in 2004.
Last May, Dixon qualified 13th as the Target team fielded a three-car squad at the 500. Despite a solid start for all three drivers, only rookie Ryan Briscoe recorded a finish, as Dixon and Darren Manning saw their attempts cut short within a ten-lap span just after the 100-lap mark.
Both cars will run under the guidance of chief engineer Julian Robertson, with Dixon paired with engineer Eric Bretzman and crew chief Ricky Davis, and Wheldon with Andy Brown and Dave Higuera.
