Papis confirmed in second Cheever entry.

As expected, Max Papis has been hired to drive a second Cheever Racing entry in this year's Indianapolis 500, despite having been out of a full-time open-wheel ride for several seasons.

The 36-year old Italian will join team owner Eddie Cheever Jr in a two-car line-up attempting to qualify for the Indy Racing League's blue riband event when rescheduled qualifying gets underway on 20 May. It will be only the second Indy 500 for Papis since he last drove for Cheever in 2002. He finished 23rd after starting 18th on that occasion.

Although the Italian has been largely involved in sportscar racing since then, Cheever insisted that he was pleased to have his former team-mate back on board.

"Max drove for Cheever Racing in his rookie race at the 500 and we did not deliver for him when we had mechanical problems with his car," the 1998 race winner said, "I am happy we are able to give him another chance. He brings a lot of enthusiasm and spirit to the programme."
