MotoGP World Champion Valentino Rossi is feared to have broken his wrist after falling heavily during the first free practice session at Assen on Thursday morning.

The Camel Yamaha rider, who had rejuvenated his 2006 title hopes with two victories in a row prior to this weekend, fell from his factory M1 early on in an extended, and rain-interrupted, session around the modified Dutch racetrack.

The Italian superstar is currently undergoing a full medical check to determine the extent of his injuries, with the first trackside reports suggesting a possible broken wrist as well as lesser chest and foot damage.

The seven-times world champion had closed the points gap from a low of 43 - after his two successive DNFs in China and France - to 29 behind Repsol Honda's Nicky Hayden prior to this weekend's eighth round of the 2006 championship.

Hayden and Fortuna Honda's Toni Elias also fell in this morning's session.
