The highly promising 15-year old Oxfordshire based rider, who has finished 12th in the last two Grand Prix, crashed less than half way through the 30-minute final qualifying session for the 125cc class and was unfortunate to have his Repsol Honda land on top of him, causing the break.

TV cameras at the spectacular 5.4-kilometre circuit picked up the aftermath of Smith's crash and showed the teenager in obvious distress, and shortly afterwards it was confirmed that his arm was broken.

The injury is a crushing blow to Smith, who was fast becoming a top 15 regular in a class where grids of more than 40 are now common. He will fly to Barcelona on Monday for a further medical examination before any decision is taken about when he can return to action.
