Morbidelli hails single lap pace, still to decide on race tyre
Franco Morbidelli says he will turn his attentions towards choosing the right tyre to last the entirety of the Czech Republic MotoGP after confirming Petronas SRT Yamaha’s impressive single lap pace by shadowing team-mate Fabio Quartararo on the timesheets in FP2.
The Italian comes to Brno eager to make amends after a strong result last time out in the Andalusian MotoGP went begging after suffering technical problems as he was getting int contention for a podium challenge.
Nonetheless, the Italian has enjoyed a strong start to his Brno weekend with a run to second fastest in FP2, just 0.007secs behind championship leading team-mate Quartararo.
Putting him in a good position for Saturday’s all-important FP3 session, Morbidelli will now turn his attention to deciding on which race tyre to use, a situation confused by the bumpy surface creating higher than expected degradation for many of the leading runners.
“We had two great sessions today and I felt like we have carried on where we left off in Jerez, which is very positive. In FP2 we used the new soft tyre and put in a really good lap on it, which I’m really happy about.
“There are some things we need to understand, especially which tyre to use in the race, because with the changing track conditions it’s not clear what the best option is at the moment.
“I’m really happy with this first day here though and I’m looking to work with the team tonight to make sure we’re getting the best performance out of everything again tomorrow.”
