TT 2013: Four discharged from hospital after race incident

The Isle of Man TT organisers have confirmed tonight night that four of the ten spectators injured in a crash in the Senior race have been discharged from hospital.

Five were set to remain in hospital overnight, with another person kept under observation in the emergency department at Nobles Hospital in Douglas.

The incident occurred at the start of the Senior TT - the main race of the famous road racing festival on the Island.

Jonathan Howarth crashed on the opening lap of the race at the bottom of Bray Hill, with his machine reportedly striking a crowd of spectators.

Howarth suffered a minor fracture in the high-speed crash.

The race, which started at 1pm, was red-flagged and later took place at 4.30pm over the original six-lap distance.

A statement issued by ACU Events Ltd said: "ACU Events Ltd can confirm that ten spectators were injured during an incident in the Senior TT race.

"The rider, Jonathan Howarth, sustained a minor fracture.

"The race was red-flagged and emergency services were immediately in attendance at the scene.

"The ten spectators and the rider were taken to hospital with injuries ranging from slight to serious but not life threatening.

"Four of the spectators have been discharged, five of the injured have been kept in hospital and one remains under observation in the emergency department."
