Alongside alleged approaches from the likes of the Brands Hatch group and the ubiquitous Sky organisation, an offer has apparently been made with the support of Stewart Grand Prix sponsor HSBC bank.

It is rumoured that John Lewis, a former chairman of Silverstone Estates and a member of the BRDC, has offered in the region of ?41million for the circuit complex, with the backing of HSBC, but that the amount is considered to be too low by BRDC chairman Lord Hesketh.

Experts place the value of the site - now that the proposed bypass has been given the go-ahead - at around ?70million, leaving potential buyers to find almost double the initial bid. The interest already generated, however, has prompted Dresdner Kleinwort Benson - the investment bank appointed by the BRDC to assess its future standing - to consider a flotation for Silverstone.
